Thanks to our intensive involvement in research and teaching, our customers benefit far beyond national borders.

In addition to active customer projects, CORTEX media GmbH has been researching a wide variety of topics for years. From security, e.g. WhatsApp “Privacy implications of presence sharing in mobile messaging applications. In Proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia (IEEE MUM 2014) Melbourne, Australia”, to IoT and Smart City, e.g. “LoRaPark: Making LoRaWAN Sensor Networks Accessible to a Public Audience (IEEE 2nd International Conference on Smart Cities 4.0) Cairo, Egypt”.

We also supervise bachelor and master theses in the fields of web engineering, IT security, LLMs and high performance web servers.

Topics,

in which we actively conduct research or participate in research and teaching.
Web Engineering

Andreas Buchenscheit and his team have taught web engineering and IT security at Ulm University of Applied Sciences and Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University for over 10 years. The combination of sound theoretical foundations with topical practical experience is not only interesting for students, but also opens up completely different insights into reality. We also go far beyond the standard in our teaching and train the specialists of tomorrow with enthusiasm and fun.

IT security

We sometimes say that IT security is the supreme discipline of computer science. Why? Not only do you need extensive, broad knowledge of all areas of IT, but you also need to combine this with experience and a thirst for research in order to identify any weaknesses. We have been conducting research in the field of IT security for many years and can thus protect our own and third-party systems from unauthorized access.

LoRaWAN

After we started using LoRaWAN wireless technology in Ulm in 2016, our city was one of the first in the world to make a free, comprehensive LoRaWAN available to its citizens. LoRaWAN stands for Long Range Low Energy Wide Area Network. A somewhat unwieldy name, which in principle describes a radio technology that can bridge long distances with little energy – but with a low bandwidth. This makes it ideal for sensor values or digital assistants in battery-operated locations.

Our research work on the LoRaWAN also extends to the LoRaPark that we developed. A show garden at the Weinhof in Ulm, where the technology is exhibited and tested.

LLMs and RAG

Since ChatGPT was released to the general public, many have heard the term Large Language Model (LLM) for the first time. Text-based generative AI – although we still believe that intelligence is a powerful word – opens up new possibilities. However, with traditional LLMs, the possibilities are limited to the “knowledge” used at the time of training. With RAG, we can give additional information to the LLM to answer questions and thus manage to provide context-based knowledge.

High Performance Server

We host websites and company portals that are accessed thousands of times per second. This requires an optimally implemented server infrastructure with a focus on high availability and high performance. Our expertise in the area of high-performance web servers is based on years of experience and testing of different approaches, which we constantly question, adapt and expand. This is the only way we are equipped for the future and for the changing Internet traffic and will continue to be a reliable partner in the field of enterprise hosting.

Publications and patents

If successful, our research work leads to publications at renowned conferences and in well-known journals. In addition, we strive to obtain a patent application for exceptional technical developments – something that is often difficult to achieve with software.
