Citysens – CORTEX founds subsidiary with local IT companies

Iot with citysens and with Cortex Media

The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming increasingly important. Market studies even predict that IoT applications will achieve a turnover of over 40 billion euros by 2022, twice as much as today.

We want to advance the Internet of Things in Ulm and develop smart solutions for numerous areas of application. We have therefore joined forces with SWU TeleNet GmbH and the two Ulm-based IT companies systemzwo GmbH and eXXcellent solutions GmbH and founded the subsidiary citysens GmbH on 11.09.2018.

Distributed servers worldwide

The basis for the IoT is a wireless network with an extremely long range and low energy consumption. Andreas Buchenscheit, Managing Director of CORTEX media GmbH, developed an interest and enthusiasm for such a network back in 2016 during a presentation on “The Things Network” (TTN) by initiator Wienke Giezeman at the eConference in Bled, Slovenia.

Shortly afterwards, Buchenscheit launched the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) project in Ulm and, together with the Verschwörhaus and initiative.ulm.digital e.V., expanded it into a regionally comprehensive, license-free network that fully meets the requirements for IoT. The foundation stone was laid and enormous potential was created. With citysens GmbH, we want to use this potential and make the world smarter together with reliable data.

Thanks to the cooperation, we can offer support in all necessary steps together with the other shareholders, i.e. enable institutions or municipalities to use IoT and develop customized solutions from a single source. This begins with the design and extends to implementation, including the provision of hardware and software, and on to operation and maintenance.

The first citysens project is already underway and involves several households in the region. In future, electricity sensors will take over the reading of the electricity meter and automatically transmit the data via LoRaWAN to the SWU database, where it will also be automatically evaluated and processed. Consumers will also be able to track their current electricity consumption at any time using an application. This ensures uncomplicated processing, which saves the supplier and consumer time and work.

Work is also already underway on other applications, such as detecting the fill level of waste garbage cans, detecting leaks in water pipes or optimizing parking spaces and traffic. The first solar-powered benches, which offer free Wi-Fi, battery charging stations and built-in heating, are already being delivered. One thing is particularly important to us: data security. Therefore, as usual, we work exclusively with the most modern and highest security standards and process the collected data in our own data center in Ulm.

Full of passion and a thirst for research, we leave nothing to chance and are ready to develop pioneering applications for the world of tomorrow with citysens GmbH.
